How much does it cost to make an iPhone app like Uber?

Uber is one of the most popular applications on the iOS app store. Before you even start app development estimations, remember – there are actually two mobile apps, not one! There is an Uber driver app – without it, the passengers will not have anybody to drive them around!

Passenger iOS app cost

Let’s look at the passenger app first. As you can see from the iOS app design, it’s rather straightforward. You can:

  • order the car
  • adjust payment methods
  • use or send vouchers

There is also a help section, containing the dispute system. If you know nothing about iOS app development, you would probably just hire a mobile apps company to do it for you.  Then the price is split into several buckets:

  • Designs and mockups – with the storyboard feature, this can very often be done at the same time, in form of a clickable mockup. Also, you need things like the iOS app icon.
  • API – required to communicate between apps and pass messages to and from the “call center” – people who supervise the operation. Needs to be developed just once for all kinds of operating systems: iOS, Android, Windows Phone.
  • iOS app – cost of developing the mobile app itself

Costs for these sections would probably be priced as follows in certain regions:

  • Designs and mockups
    • US:  3000-10000 USD
    • Europe (Russia/Poland/Czech Republic): 3000-8000 EUR
    • Europe (Switzerland/Norway/West Germany): 5000-15000 EUR
  • API – required to communicate between apps and pass messages to and from the “call center” – people who supervise the operation. Needs to be developed just once for all kinds of operating systems: iOS, Android, Windows Phone.
    • US:  6000-20000 USD
    • Europe (Russia/Poland/Czech Republic): 5000-15000 EUR
    • Europe (Switzerland/Norway/West Germany): 8000-20000 EUR
  • iOS app – cost of developing the mobile app itself
    • US:  12000-40000 USD
    • Europe (Russia/Poland/Czech Republic): 10000-25000 EUR
    • Europe (Switzerland/Norway/West Germany): 15000-75000 EUR

Keep in mind, that these are just market prices, top agencies or high school developers can charge you much more or much less for developing an iOS app. Same applies for most Sillicon Valley developers who will probably charge you twice that.

So, depending on where you are and what developers you use, it seems the the app development cost should land (APIs included) between 18000 EUR (21000 USD) and 110 000 EUR (120 000 USD).

App development- additional things to consider

There’s a couple additional things which you need to take into consideration when considering developing a similar app:

  • The Uber mobile app allows you to enter your credit card number – this requires PCI certification or a certified partner. Getting a PCI certificate usually involves following strict procedures, which can cost your company 10-50 000 USD, depending on how you’re structured.
  • Never go for team which cannot offer maintenance of your app – even if you do not plan new features, new iOS SDK versions (and new iPhones) are released, so you need to constantly improve your app. From experience, this usually means at least one half-time developer working on the app.
  • The “invisible features” – how about in-app Analytics, conversion metrics? It all takes time to integrate and can take 10-20% additional budget.
  • Handling “corner cases” – what to do when the driver or customer loses network connectivity? His GPS starts to send wrong data (0,0 coordinates?)? Runs out of battery? Usually, to make a service work you need to consider all these corner cases – either on the technical or business side.

How much a fully functional Uber app would really cost?

Based on the above – and assuming no web interface, just the iOS version of Uber passenger and driver apps and a backend to handle those, could be probably developed under 100 000 USD in the US and 80 000 EUR in Europe. This would, however, involve a lot of management effort on the owner side and coordinating the developers on your own. If you plan to use an experienced agency that will deliver a working, bug-free product for you, have at least 120 000 USD (100 000 EUR) in your pocket!
